Out & About With Davy - Camping And Travel Australia

About Dayv

G’day! I’m Dayv – pronounced Dave. I am the son of proud Welsh parents and I am the first Australian born to our family.

Being a child of the ‘60’s, I’ve slept in cars, panel vans, campers, trailers, tents, caravans, hootchies and even a drain pipe not yet laid. There was even that time when I slept under a Hills clothes hoist, but I guess that that doesn’t really count as camping.

My Love Of Camping And The Australian Outdoors

I started work as a cartographer with the then Forestry Department in the Queensland Government and my interests in maps has stuck since then. After ten years as a cartographer, I moved on to construction, public policy and procurement still with the Queensland Government.

My wife and I have two kids. Our son, now married with a young child, still lives in south east Queensland area and our daughter has moved to Melbourne to study, work and play. I’ll be asking my son and daughter-in-law to include some articles on travelling with children and we can watch them grow together.

My son and I joined the Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC) in 2009. During that time, my son was promoted to the highest cadet rank of Cadet Under Officer (CUO) and I rose to Flight Lieutenant (AAFC) and as Commanding Officer of our Squadron with some experience in youth development. During this time, our interests took us both in the field related activities such as field craft, navigation, survival, leadership and camp craft.

Now, I have been retired since 2018 and having an absolute ball and enjoying my time with my wife – Minister for Finance and War.

We have several tents and hootchies, a swag, a camper, a pop-top caravan (with a new one planned) and a Mazda BT50 dual cab to hoof it all around with.

Sharing My Camping Knowledge

But, it’s time to give back.

I have been reading; poring over maps and websites; following and contributing to several Facebook pages and groups for many years now; and I have even created my own pages with Blogs and Vlogs.

What I plan to do on this site, is provide a safe place for newcomers to camping and travel in Australia to learn, explore and ask questions – and get answers. I also hope that people who already camp and travel come here for ideas, travel tips and to share their skills, knowledge, photos and stories with us all. I also have several friends and contacts with various backgrounds who I am sure you will enjoy meeting on this page.

While many towns and locations I’ll take you to will have churches, gardens, family fun parks and museums etc, my intended focus will be on places that are a little unknown, culturally significant, close by and perhaps under our very noses – but often overlooked. I’ll also look to discover what makes these places unique and the people that’ll make your visit enjoyable. Who knows how many bakers, butchers and pubs we’ll visit.

Camping Mantra

My mantra for Out&About with Dayv is to Explore | Learn | Connect | Promote and to help you do the same.

I have not been everywhere (who has?). I do not know everything and I am still learning. So, I’ll be exploring, learning, connecting and promoting as we go and I’ll share that with you.

I hope you’ll join me and I hope to see you Out&About.

Acknowledgment Of Country

Through this website, we would like to respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which our travels and camps take place. We pay our respects to the Elders past, present and emerging, for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and hopes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We believe that a better understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures develops an enriched appreciation of Australia’s cultural heritage. This is essential to the maturity of Australia as a nation and fundamental to the development of our Australian identity.
